The Department of Transport has signed a memorandum of understanding with the Health Professions Council of South Africa (HPCSA), which will reduce the number of time motorists will have to spend waiting in queues, says Transport minister Fikile Mbalula. Addressing media at an event in Midrand on Thursday (7 October), Mbalula said that the agreement would allow motorists to use private optometrists who will have the authority to upload eye test results directly to the eNatis system. This means that motorists will no longer have to wait for an open eye test machine when applying for a new licence or renewal. The minister said that this new feature will be officially rolled out to driving licence centres around the country shortly. WIFE APPEARS FOR HUSBAND'S KILLING

EASTERN CAPE – The 43-year-old wife to the brutally murdered Warrant Officer Kolile Kulu will appear in Butterworth Magistrate’s court with other co-accused on 07 October 2021. She was arrested on 06 October 2021 for allegations of killing her police husband. It is alleged that on 30 August 2021 at 22:00 while Warrant Officer Kolile Kulu was asleep at his home, he was killed by three unknown males who are reported to have also taken his official firearm. All three purported hitmen and other two suspects alleged to have been involved are under arrest. On 06 October 2021, the wife of the deceased was arrested and charged for the murder and detained in one of the East London police stations. All the suspects will appear in the Butterworth Magistrate’s court on 07 October 2021.

WOMAN ARRESTED FOR POSSESSION OF SUSPECTED STOLEN PROPERTY AND BRIBERY

GAUTENG - In an effort to fight property related crime, the police in Johannesburg Central arrested a woman subsequent to being found in possession of suspected stolen goods. On 06 October 2021, the K9 Unit in Johannesburg Central received information about a bus transporting suspected stolen motorbikes out of the country. The information was promptly operationalised and the members activated patrols at the vicinity of the bus depot. While patrolling, the luggage fitting the given description was spotted at the depot. Upon searching, members discovered stripped motorbike parts and the woman found at the depot called an unknown man to send her R1000-00 which she used in an attempt to bribe the police. She was arrested and is expected to appear before Johannesburg Magistrates’ Court soon on charges of possession of suspected stolen property and bribing a police official.

SAPS SAYS 376 FIREARMS LOSS IN 2020/2021 REPORT

Cape Town – The police have recovered 376 firearms that had been stolen from members of the SAPS in the last financial year. The theft of guns from SAPS, dealers and individuals, has been a problem over the years. Police Minister Bheki Cele has been pushing for the regulation of guns in the country. He has said this would reduce the number of illegal guns ending up in the wrong hands. But opposition parties are up in arms that this will take away the right of self-defence by individuals to own firearms. In the SAPS annual report tabled in Parliament, the police said they have been able to recover thousands of firearms stolen from dealers and individuals. “The improvement of the regulation of firearms will reduce the number of illegal firearms in circulation, as one of the key drivers of violent crime and play a key role in the investigation and the detection of firearm-related crimes and ultimately the efficient control of firearms, as required by the Firearms Control Act, 2000.
