LEARNERS SPOKE OUT ABOUT RACISM AT CORNWALL HILL COLLEGE

Some learners at Cornwall Hill College in Centurion, Pretoria, have spoken out about prevailing racism in the school. They say this is affecting their schooling experience. Learners and parents gathered for a mass protest on Monday morning, calling for an end to racism and the slow pace of transformation at the prestigious school. These include among others, the language and hair policy, sporting codes and lack of representation of teaching staff and the board. Gauteng Education MEC Panayza Lesufi met the school’s leadership on Monday and promised racism would no longer happen under his watch. Three people have been killed following a head-on collision between and car and bakkie on the N1 near Laingsburg in the Karoo. Traffic spokesperson, Jandre Bakker, says officials are on the scene of the crash. He says the road is currently closed but traffic is being diverted via a rest area. The exact cause of the crash is being investigated.

An Eastern Cape police captain can return to work 10 years after being fired when he was wrongly convicted of indecent assault.  A police officer who lost his job when he was wrongly convicted of indecent assault is in line for a decade's worth of back pay after his six-year fight for reinstatement ended in victory. The labour appeal court in Gqeberha ordered the national police commissioner this week to reinstate Capt Meshack Phopho “forthwith ... with no loss of rank, salary, allowances, privileges or benefits”. In 2015, then-commissioner Riah Phiyega used a technicality when she rejected a recommendation to reinstate Phopho after the high court in Grahamstown upheld his appeal. Phopho won his case for reinstatement in the labour court but the police appealed and unleashed a team of three advocates against Phopho's sole legal aid lawyer in the labour appeal court. PRETORIA - The Piet Retief regional court has sentenced 20-year-old Mpumalanga man Ndumiso Nxumalo to life and 28 years’ imprisonment after he repeatedly stabbed, raped and robbed a 25-year-old woman in 2019. Nxumalo was sentenced on Thursday after being convicted of rape, robbery with aggravating circumstances, attempted murder and defeating the ends of justice, National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) Mpumalanga spokeswoman Monica Nyuswa said in a statement. She said in June 2019 the victim, who knew Nxumalo as they stayed in the same neighbourhood, was walking in Phola Park when he accosted her. “He took her to a half-built house, where he inserted his fingers into her private parts repeatedly, stabbed her several times and dragged her to a nearby graveyard where he robbed her of her R15 before he threw her in an open grave,” said Nyuswa. JOHANNESBURG - Cooking oil prices will remain high at least until the end of the year. Sunflower oil has risen by 60 percent since January last year due to poor harvests of oil-producing crops such as sunflower, soya, and canola last year.  Food costs continue to rise: Household Affordability Index Its added pressure on consumers who use oil as a staple in their food preparation. The latest consumer price figures show oil and fats rose by more than 16% year on year from April last year to April this year. South Africa does not produce enough vegetable oil to be able to meet local demand and imports most of its needs from Europe.

The Human Settlements Department says it will spend R3.8 billion this financial year and R11 billion over the next three financial years to upgrade informal settlements in South Africa. This could see the upgrade of at least 1 500 settlements in the country. On Friday, the department said budget cuts, mainly due to reprioritisation during the COVID-19 pandemic, had led it to pursue partnerships with the private sector to assist with the rising demand for housing. NORTHERN CAPE - A two yearlong clandestine operation dubbed- Operation Crassula was successfully terminated during the early hours of 28 May 2021 in the Namakwa area and the Western Cape. The undercover operation was initiated in May 2019 during which agents engaged in negotiations and transactions amounting to millions of rands were conducted between agents and buyers of the protected plant species. Crassula is a diverse and extensive genus of succulent plants commonly known as Jade plant or Pink Joy. GAUTENG – 58-year-old Ah Kin Geemooi appeared in the Kempton Park Magistrates’ Court on charges of illegal dealing in drugs yesterday, 27 May 2021 and was released on bail. In November last year, the Hawks’ Serious Organised Crime Investigation in Germiston were called by the warehouse management in Kempton Park for investigation regarding a suspicious cargo delivered for shipment. Upon arrival and further inspection of the cargo, authorities found 268 000 mandrax tablets with an estimated street value of R10.7 million, wrapped in brown boxes destined for Cape Town. Further investigation within a week resulted in the arrest of Jerome MacCarthy (47) who was the consignment’s intended recipient in Cape Town during a controlled delivery executed by the investigation team in Cape Town. JOINT OPERATIONS SEES SUCCESS IN NAMAQUA REGION

A joint operation involving roleplayers such as the ZF Mgcawu(ZFM) Cluster Visible Policing team, Upington SAPS K9 unit,  Upington Border Police and Kakamas Detectives dealt a massive blow to the drug trade in the district . The information driven drug raids took place from Monday 24th to Thursday 27 May 2021 in Upington, Rosedale and Kakamas areas. Police arrested seven suspects and confiscated Mandrax and Dagga to the approximate street value of R700 000. The suspects was charged with dealing in drugs and dagga and should be appearing in court soon.  The Acting Provincial Commissioner, Maj Gen Johan Bean lauds the SAPS members for their continued drive in ensuring alleged drug dealers are brought to book. Maj Gen Bean also thanked the community for their role played during these actions, as this portrays partnership policing at it's best.

DEALERS DECLARED DRUG CONSIGNMENT AS DOCUMENTS NABBED

GAUTENG – Two suspects, Lihle Manana (42) and Calvin Mzoli Mpemba (44) were remanded in custody on allegations of illegal dealing in drugs by the Germiston Magistrate’s Court this morning.  It is alleged that the suspects dropped off a package declared as documents at a courier company in Edenvale on Monday, 24 May. The said consignment was destined to an address in the United Kingdom. The Hawks’ Serious Organised Crime Investigation in Germiston were called by the courier company for investigation regarding a suspicious package delivered for shipment. Upon arrival and further inspection of the suspected package, the investigation team found 315 grams of suspected heroine concealed in an envelope. Further investigation led the investigation team to a positively identified address in the Boksburg area where a suspect was brought in for questioning. On Wednesday, 26 May Manana and Mpembe were also brought in for questioning.  They were consequently detained shortly afterwards

The members spotted the blue and white ilulaBus and directed it towards the weighbridge.    The three suspects were found on the bus and upon searching their luggage a 9 mm Star pistol with serial number intact and 25 rounds of ammunition was found in one bag including stolen cigarettes and toiletries. CAPE TOWN – A policeman has been sentenced to life behind bars for shooting dead a man during an argument in Khayelitsha in 2018. Thanduxolo Mbonyana was found guilty of the murder of Lusanda Makosana. The National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) on Thursday welcomed the sentence, saying the crime tarnished the relationship between the police and the community it served. Mbonyana was a sergeant when he went to a party his girlfriend was having in Mandela Park, where he shot Makosana seven times. In his plea and sentencing agreement, Mbonyana confirms he then dragged the body into his car and dumped it elsewhere in Mandela Park. The shooting happened in front of people who were at the house party. The NPA said the officer tampered with the crime scene as he attempted to clean the blood using a mop, water, and household cleaner. 20 YEARS FOR RAPIST

NORTH WEST - The Itsoseng Regional Court has on Tuesday, 25 May 2021, sentenced Gopolang Piet Lempe (36) to 20 years imprisonment for raping the then 11-year-old minor. The victim was on Monday, 7 October 2013 at about 19:00, playing with two friends near her home at Verdwaal No. 2 (Sonderwater) outside Itsoseng near Lichtenburg when they were approached by an unknown male person who asked the victim to accompany him to the shop. The victim refused and the suspect grabbed the victim, but her friends managed to flee back to the victim’s home. Moreover, the suspect forcefully dragged the victim to an open field near the Power Station where he forced the victim to undress. The victim refused and the suspect assaulted her and subsequently raped her without using protection. After the incident, the victim managed to flee and ran back home where she reported the incident to her mother who informed the police. The search for the suspect was immediately launched and he was eventually arrested

JOHANNESBURG - Convicted serial rapist Sello Abram Maponya, who raped and robbed 56 women across Pretoria suburbs for five years, has been given 1,088 years behind bars. Judge Papi Mosopa handed down the hefty sentence in the North Gauteng High Court on Thursday afternoon. He had earlier found Maponya guilty of 41 rapes, 40 counts of robbery with aggravating circumstances and 40 counts of housebreaking. The court ordered that the sentence imposed should not run concurrently as the crimes were committed in various townships over a five-year period. EASTERN CAPE - Algoa Park Detectives are urgently seeking the next of kin of an alleged robbery suspect who was fatally wounded on Wednesday night, 26/05 in Algoa Park. RAPE ACCUSED TEACHER RESIGNS

Limpopo Education Department spokesperson Tidimalo Chuene says they have accepted the teacher's resignation. The 50-year-old Mbilwi Secondary School teacher accused of raping a 17-year-old learner outside Thohoyandou in Limpopo, has resigned. The accused, Solomon Makhuvha, who is still in custody for the alleged offence, has tendered his resignation to the Education Department. Makhuvha allegedly raped the learner from the same school in 2018. Limpopo Education Department spokesperson Tidimalo Chuene says they have accepted the teacher’s resignation. “His resignation was accepted and processed accordingly. He has since been terminated from our system. We deem accusations against him serious and worrying.” Chuene says they want the law to take its course. THREE NABBED WITH DAGGA

FREE STATE - The Ficksburg highway patrol have successfully intercepted suspicious looking vehicle and arrested three suspects with maize meal bags containing dagga.  On 2021-05-26 at approximately 10:00 two Ficksburg Highway patrol R26 road police officials intercepted three Lesotho foreign nationals near Denmar Farm whilst patrolling. They also conducting stop and search. They stopped a blue and yellow Honda Fit SUV from Lesotho two males and female persons. Upon searching the car, they found six 50kg maize meal bags containing dagga to an estimated Street value of R128 000. The three were en route to Kimberly-Northern Cape. The three suspects aged between 40 and 30 will be appearing before Ficksburg Magistrate court on Friday, 28 May 2021 facing charge of dealing in dagga.

JOHANNESBURG - Deputy African National Congress (ANC) secretary-general Jessie Duarte is arguing that Ace Magashule should know the party’s constitution and its rules better. This is the argument contained in the responding affidavit filed by Duarte opposing the secretary-general’s court bid to have his suspension overturned. Duarte’s affidavit was on behalf of the party, its president, Cyril Ramaphosa, and herself. She announced during a post-national working committee (NWC) meeting that the ANC had filed its response to Magashule. He was the most senior member of the party to have been temporarily suspended as per its step aside resolution. The ANC was asking the court to dismiss his application with costs. GAUTENG - Today the Putfontein Saps members in collaboration with Transnet officials and Afriguard Security Company conducted a second hand goods operations around Putfontein policing precinct.  The operations was all about scrapyard compliance. While conducting the operations, a search was conducted at one of the scrapyard in Mayfield cnr Lurie and Brazil, a copper cables was found stashed inside the bags. The man responsible for the scrap could not give satisfactory answers as to how the copper landed in his business, and the copper was identified as Transnet copper cables. EASTERN CAPE - Around midday Tuesday 25 May 2021, off duty police officer based at a unit in Port Alfred received information about possible abalone poachers in the Kasouga area. The Officer who was on rest days immediately responded and proceeded to Kasouga beach where he conducted a foot patrol. He noticed tracks going from the sea towards the dunes which he followed. The tracks led him into the dense sea bush where he found five males sitting around a camp fire. He also noticed diving suits hanging in the trees which confirmed the information that he received. He arrested 4 of the five suspects. A total of 68 Abalone shells were found in five abalone bags was seized, together with chucking tools. S.A POST OFFICE INSOLVENT

The South African Post Office has confirmed that it is in the process of closing about 130 of its offices across the country mainly due to financial challenges. It has told Parliament that delays to complete the process have been caused by the current contracts it has entered into with various landlords. Chief Executive Officer Nomkhitha Mona says the majority of the earmarked offices have already been vacated. “Now we are left with 80, those are the ones that we are still looking into closing. I think what is important to note is that sometimes we do have to respect the current contracts that we have with the landlords because if we just step out of it immediately we then prone to penalties. So we are doing that in a staggered form so the number is 80 to go and the target was 130 so we have to close some of those,” says Mona. This unpalatable incident occurred yesterday, 24 May 2021, in Sakhile Township near Standerton.  According to information, the suspect was last seen in a shack with his girlfriend, however his family members were shocked to realise that the very same shack the two were in, was burning. While they were still pondering about what happened, news broke that the suspect escaped the fire with some burnt wounds, surprisingly leaving behind his girlfriend. Emergency Services and police were summoned to the scene where his girlfriend was unfortunately certified dead. Police suspected a foul play about the incident as the man is believed to have started the fire, hence he was arrested and currently under police guard at the hospital. JOHANNESBURG - Embattled former eThekwini mayor Zandile Gumede is the latest high-profile figure in KwaZulu-Natal to voluntarily step aside in line with the governing party's step-aside rule. ANC KZN Deputy Chairperson Mike Mabuyakhulu became the first in the province to do so last month The ANC in KZN says 12 other members have now stepped aside following meetings with the Provincial Executive Committee. The party says it doesn't expect any of those members to contest the step-aside resolution in court, something that they welcome.   

MINISTER MKHIZE SAY HE DIDN'T BENEFIT PERSONALLY FROM DIGITAL VIBES CONTRACT

JOHANNESBURG - Health Minister Zweli Mkhize has stressed he did not personally benefit from a controversial communications contract with Digital Vibes, whose deal has been found to have been irregular, resulting in fruitless and wasteful expenditure. President Cyril Ramaphosa and Treasury have now received a report by Ngubane Tax Assurance Advisory Firm on the appointment of Digital Vibes to the tune of R150 million between 2019 and 2020. Mkhize has again denied any links to the company, which has strong ties to his long-time close associate Tahera Mather as well as his personal assistant Naadhira Mitha. Mkhize is adamant that there is no link between him and those implicated in the irregular contract. “It was only after several months after that resignation that I was alerted by my office that Mrs Mitha was now working with the communications company.” The health department said investigations were still ongoing to determine if there was any fraud and corruption amid the irregular exp

FIDELITY ADD DRONES TO FIGHTING CRIME

South Africa's largest private security provider, Fidelity, is adding a squadron of drones operated by trained pilots to keep an eye on estates in Johannesburg.The two-month trial will be conducted in partnership with UDS Group, which has drones equipped with electro-optical and infrared sensors.The drones will be linked to Fidelity's mobile command centre which dispatches its armed responders.The programme will be extended to shopping centres from August if Fidelity gets its licence to fly in other areas. South African private security firm, Fidelity, is now using drones to survey security estates in Johannesburg as part of a pilot programme to locate criminals quicker. SAPS FAILURE TO IMPLEMENT DISCIPLINE TO ITS MEMBERS

The chairperson of Parliament’s Portfolio Committee on Policing, Tina Joemat-Pettersson, has called on police management to account for its ‘systemic’ failure to discipline officers accused of violent crimes. She intends to raise this when the committee meets with the South African Police Service on ‘discipline management’ on Wednesday. The meeting may be the first time that SAPS is compelled to respond to a recent Viewfinder investigation which revealed that senior police officers routinely exploit legal and regulatory loopholes to protect their colleagues implicated in violent crimes including assault, torture, shootings, rape and unlawful killings. TAX EVASION ACCUSE APPEAR IN COURT

                                      FREE STATE – Accused Mabuseng Joseph Morebudi (47) appeared before the Bethlehem Magistrate Court on Tuesday, 25 May 2021 where he was facing charges of fraud. It is alleged that over the period of 2011 and 2016 Morebudi failed to register pay as you earn (PAYE) and submission of EMP 201 returns as well as deduction of employees’ tax or to pay over to SARS. Subsequently the South African Revenue Services (SARS) was prejudiced and suffered a total loss exceeding R13.3 million.  A preliminary probe by SARS prompted a report to the Hawks’ Serious Commercial Crime Investigation in Bloemfontein during April 2018, which resulted in his arrest in the early hours of today and first appearance in court. The case against Morebudi has been postponed to Wednesday, 11 August 2021 for legal representative. Morebudi is out on a R3000 bail.
